TBI Nabs Woman for Memphis Cab Driver’s Murder

MEMPHIS, TN-The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Shelby County woman for Murder and Robbery.

On February 12th, 2014 at approximately 6:00 PM, TBI Agents and members of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department arrested Tanuja L. Rivers, age 19, of Arlington, TN at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. She has been charged with one count of Felony First Degree Murder and one count of Especially Aggravated Robbery. Through routine investigative methods, enough probable cause was developed to charge Rivers for this homicide. The motive and exact circumstances surrounding this event are still being determined. Rivers is being held at the Fayette County Jail on a $1,000,000.00 bond.

On Friday, December 6, 2013, 43 year old Zewdneh Assemu of Bartlett, was found beaten and stabbed to death by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office in a field near Highway 196 North. The cab Assemu was driving was located near the scene along with some of his personal belongings. The victim was found after his wife reported him missing to police. At the request of the Office of District Attorney General Mike Dunavant, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began the investigation with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
